For over 40 years beginning in the late 1960s, Hatteras Yachts practically owned the American market for production and semi-production fiberglass motoryachts. Starting with the Hatteras 41 Double Cabin in 1962, Hatteras introduced one breakthrough motoryacht design after another. In 1969 the now-iconic Hatteras 53 Motor Yacht became the standard by which other motoryachts were measured for many years, and in 1971 the Hatteras 70 Motor yacht became the first production 70-foot fiberglass yacht ever. The rest, as they say, is history. It wasn't until the mid 1990s that new European motoryachts—with their sleek styling and high-performance hulls—began to give buyers an alternative to Hatteras yachts.
By the end of the 1990s the growth years of Hatteras were ending. By then, however, the company had produced an impressive series of over 70-yachts that left an enduring mark in the marine industry. The ten Hatteras models profiled below are among the best-known of these remarkable yachts. As such, they will remain an important segent of the U.S. motoryacht market for years to come.

Hatteras 72 Motor Yacht
At a Glance: A huge 72-footer with a wide 20'2" beam and enormous 160,000 lb. displacement — heavier by far than any European yacht her size. Features include an expansive salon and huge master suite with king bed and his-and-hers heads. Forward of the salon is a huge country kitchen galley with an island and dinette. There is no lower helm although one was optional. Offered with three, four, or even five staterooms, the standard three-stateroom arrangement includes a sitting area in the full-beam master and two VIP guest cabins forward with en-suite heads. Because the Hatteras 72 is a semicustom yacht, any number of interior layouts were possible. The same was true of the flybridge—it could be open or fully enclosed and air-conditioned (which most are). The engine room is enormous. It takes a lot of power to get the Hatteras 72 up and running. Cat 1800hp Cat C12 engines cruise at 18–20 knots.
Price Range: From $2.5 million to $3-plus million.

The owner’s suite features a king bed, walk-in closet, and large head with tub/shower. A small aft deck for line handling remains at the stern.
