Boating Evolution on Display

The Viking 37 Billfish becomes the new Viking 38 Billfish.

The Viking 37 Billfish was a sales success from Day One. The 38 Billfish is the next step forward.

THE VIKING 37 Billfish is based on the Ocean 37 Billfish produced by Ocean Yachts starting in 2008. Viking acquired the rights to this boat when they purchased the Ocean facilities in late 2015. The running surface and basic interior layout of the Ocean model remained intact while fresh exterior styling and beefed up construction were added by Viking. In fact, the Viking looks even better than the original model thanks largely to the addition of a new single-piece wraparound windshield. In classic day boat style, the salon and lower helm are open to the cockpit with aft facing bench seating over a bait freezer to starboard, insulated in-deck fish boxes, and a bait/rigging station to port. A livewell is built into the transom, and a deck hatch provides access to the generator and optional Seakeeper SK 6 stabilizer. Belowdeck, Amtico vinyl flooring is standard in the open-plan interior. An L-shaped galley with Corian counter, hidden cooktop, convection/microwave oven and refrigerator is opposite a large head compartment with stall shower. Cummins 550hp QSB 6.7 diesels cruise at 26–28 knots (mid 30s top). Viking built 24 of these popular boats before replacing her with the updated 38 Billfish in 2019.

"The cockpit is an offshore angler's dream. The transom has a molded-in fish box/livewell, and a door and gate to starboard. Twin mezzanine couches keep everyone comfortable and engaged while trolling, and underneath hide a bait freezer and a rigging station with freshwater sink."

–Saltwater Sportsman

"...the interior of this boat presents itself with a very strong alternative to a center console of the same size, and those that are even larger. The excellent fit and finish of the high-gloss Juno teak wood is just what you would expect from the craftsmen at Viking Yachts."

–Marlin Magazine

"Designed to emulate the historic Merritt and Rybovich day boats of that by gone era, the Viking 37 Billfish raises the bar on the memory of these classic vessels with slick, contemporary styling and modern and more durable materials.

–Topspeed.com

"With a 109-square-foot cockpit ready for fighting chair or rocket launcher, the boat’s design is clearly aimed at the hardcore fish market. The command deck has a salon-style living area with portside U-shaped dinette and hi-low table, plus lounge to starboard with rod storage."

Marlin Magazine

"To bag the big ones, anglers also require a fast and nimble vessel. This sport-fisherman is powered with twin 550 hp Cummins QSB6.7 diesels spinning propellers the builder says are tuned to S-class tolerances, which are the most accurate pitch tolerances available."

–Yachting Magazine

"Up top, sightlines should be excellent and unimpeded at the well-organized, walkaround center-console-style helm station. There’s seating for four people on benches that flank the helm on both sides."

BUILDING ON the success of the Viking 37 Billfish introduced in 2018, the 38 Billfish is a pocket-sized fishing boat with a classic day boat layout. She's a foot longer and two inches wider than her predecessor and Viking engineers went from two aluminum fuel tanks to a single fiberglass tank to free up engine room space. The standard layout includes a forward stateroom with a queen berth and galley belowdecks, with an option for crossover bunks forward and a lower helm station. The cockpit is visibly larger than that of the 37 Billfish and includes an in-deck mounting plate for fighting chair or table installations. Other big-boat features include in-deck insulated fish boxes port and starboard, transom door with lift gate, bait freezer, transom fish box and live well, tackle storage and fresh and raw-water wash downs. The mezzanine-style seats flanking the centerline walk through are protected from the sun by the flybridge overhang. The flybridge is designed with a center console walkaround helm with Palm Beach-style controls. A Seakeeper SK 6 gyrostabilizer is optional. Powered with twin 550hp Cummins QSB 6.7 diesels, the cruising speed is 28–30 knots (mid 30s top).
